We started in the early eighties, a time when Jon Watson-Miller was competing in the Paris-Dakar and other long-distance off-road races. Due to no fault of his own (yeah right), crashing happened with monotonous regularity and Jon realised that he had so many BMW bits left over he may as well try and get some of his money back. Jon's mechanic, Paul Ricketts, was fed-up with dispatching during the off-season, so together they decided to open Bracken Motorcycle Workshop as a small workshop specialising in preparing and servicing BMW boxers and selling used parts. This carried on for quite a few years while they gained a reputation as the place for performance boxers in the UK; second-hand bikes sales increased but were still secondary to the used parts and workshop side of the business.
I don't know if you remember, but during the early nineties, the exchange rate meant that UK goods were really cheap compared to the rest of Europe. Continental KTM dealers were coming over and buying used beemers by the vanload. This situation reversed a few years later and now it was us crossing the channel and buying not just used, but also new bikes from our contacts in Belgium and Germany. We started to expand the premises, opening a proper showroom and taking on sales staff just for this side of the business.
From the late nineties the KTM business started to snowball, with the premises expanding again to allow us to stock the wonderful Touratech range of touring, rally and race accessories, and we became KTM's number one dealer in the UK. During all this time the staff have remained remarkably constant, with Jon in overall charge and Paul in the workshop. We are not such a small company any more, but still try to treat our customers with respect and honesty - many of them have been with us for over a decade. On that note it's remarkable how much business we get from people who bought their bike from a major franchise, only to find that the after-sales service is (ahem) somewhat lacking. One area we still haven't managed to fully solve is the waiting list for the workshop; we refuse to take on less than first-rate technicians, who are few and far between, meaning that we have to give priority to customers who bought their KTM bike from us.
